The bird’s diet consisted of blossoms, seeds,and fruits of grasses and trees. A favorite food was the seed of the cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium), a hardy weed species that was abundant in the plains habitat and marginal forest areas. It also fed on the fruits of hackberry, mulberry,beech, oak, sycamore, and cypress trees.
