Terrestrial hermit crabs live on land, and that is why they are also called land hermit crabs. Many owners refer to them affectionately as “Hermies.” Although they are born in the ocean, after occupying their first seashell, they gradually spend more time on land until they are terrestrial. By the time they are mature, they have modified gills that breathe humid air, but that cannot be submerged in water for very long.
