Rose De Dan offers Reiki to cow ©Rose De Dan 2009

All of us are involved in the dance of life; the endless cycle of birth and of death. In order that life may be sustained, energy, in the form of matter—food—must be consumed, no matter what species we are. Every living being is part of the food chain, but in this country especially, humans have removed themselves from this dance as much as possible. Gone are the days where we lived close to the land and to the animals that inhabited it. Gone the times of crop failures, and scarcity of game, and the possibility of winters with little food. Also gone is our relationship with the seasons and the natural cycles, and our appreciation of the spirits of the animals and the plants we share Pachamama, this earth, with. Instead, we manage our crops, and farm specific animals in great abundance. And in so doing we have weakened ourselves physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

I am not a vegetarian, and never have been, it just never felt right for me. As an animal lover I used to feel guilty about that until I learned about the Native American perspective, which is that all life is equal; if we only eat plants then we are saying that animals are better than plants. Their perspective felt right to me and for me. Each of us must make our own ethical and subjective choices, and mine was to continue to eat from all of the food groups, but with awareness. But what about the further implications of eating animals in this day and age?

In Unheard Voices I wrote about our need as humans to maintain connection with the natural world around us by bringing the outside (animals, plants, fountains, etc.) into our homes, an attempt to re-establish connection with the “Other Nations” that we share this world with. Some of those “Other Nations” live on factory farms. In order to forcefully regulate the lives of the animals we raise for food, such as veal calves and chickens, we raise them indoors, confining them to cages or stalls, thereby also removing their connection to the natural world and to the natural cycle of birth and death.

For example, egg-laying hens are crammed into very small cages, running in rows—a minimum of 60,000 birds may inhabit one building. As a result of frustration (they are not able to stand up straight, walk anywhere, block out the unending noise, touch the ground or see the sun) these hens must be de-beaked (the ends of their beaks are cut off) so that they do not attack their neighbors. The lights are routinely left on 24 hours a day to encourage increased egg production. Respiratory disease is common since crowded and unnatural conditions create immune system problems. Force molting, where feed is withdrawn for up to 14 days, is routine to encourage a new egg-laying cycle. Under these circumstances the life of a hen is very short, and considering the quality of life, mercifully so.

Such conditions cannot produce high quality food. “Garbage in, garbage out.” “You are what you eat.” Such trite sayings, but relevant. If you supply poor quality food and only minimal life-sustaining conditions—totally removing any access to the outside world and any semblance of normal life—how could you possibly expect to get high quality nutritive food? And what about the energy associated with the life that animal has led? Ever sit next to someone you did not know and KNOW that person was angry? And have you then felt that after you left some of that negative energy stayed with you? The same is true for animals that we consume. If they lead unhappy and unnatural lives, how much of that energy goes into your energy body? All living beings are more than just physical bodies, we are feeling, energetic, and spiritual beings as well. As our society removes itself more and more from the natural world our lives and our health can become more and more unbalanced. There is an increase in cancer rates in both humans and animals, and I believe that one of the reasons is the food consumed and how it is produced.

So, what can you do? Becoming a vegetarian is not a lifestyle choice that I am making at this time. Instead I am voting with my dollars for healthier food and happier animals. Look for eggs produced by uncaged or free-range hens, or buy fertile eggs since the birds must be uncaged in order to mate. I am willing to pay a little more because my life and health, and the lives and health of others, is worth it.

And from an energetic and spiritual standpoint, no matter what the type or source of food, take a moment to acknowledge the gift of the life and the energy that you are about to consume. Rejoin the dance of life with joy—your spirit, your health, and the spirits and health of the animals and plants will be richer for it.

Postscript: I am overjoyed to see the changes that have taken place since this article was first written. Animal rights is becoming more prominent even in primetime television. The popular TV series “Bones” featured a recent episode which educated visitors about factory farming. The plot line involved a murder that took place on a chicken farm, and actress Emily Deschanel, who plays the character Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan in Fox’s hit series, was pivotal in obtaining usage of real footage of such practices as revealed in a recent interview with her.

Welcome to Carnival of Healing #215!

Last week the Carnival was hosted by Janet Dagley Dagley at The Reiki Digest.

This is the second time the Carnival has been hosted here on the Wild Reiki and Shamanic Healing Blog, and once again I had a great time exploring new articles, insights, and perspectives from other bloggers around the world. It is kind of like going on a virtual adventure for mind, body and spirit. I hope you find them as inspiring as I did!

FOR ANIMAL LOVERS

In this issue we are blessed with an abundance of great stories and articles about animals, animal teachers, and animal healing.

Our first post is actually a photo submitted by Maggi at Cottage Reiki of a hen receiving Reiki after being attacked by a buzzard, proving that Reiki is not just for urban animals!

Did you know that what you think can influence your animal? Lena McCullough, DVM of A Path with Paws explores how the power of intention can affect your animal companion, and offers three easy-to-use exercises to improve healing in You Are What You Think.

And animal communicator Danielle Tremblay shares the story of a dog who became ill and how he was able to supply information for the vets that ultimately contributed to his diagnosis and complete recovery in William and the ‘River Rock’: A Health Story.

If you have ever loved and lost an animal companion you will be touched by the experiences that Maureen Burkley of Healing Animal Truths and her dog Lucky share in the final stages of Lucky’s hospice care. Lucky still had something to teach Maureen, and was not leaving until she did. Read Lucky Rose Burkley 7/12/95-10/15/09, and keep the tissues handy.

Of course I love Reiki stories about animals, and this one comes from John Sawyer of Critter Reiki, animal shelter volunteer. Learn how Reiki can facilitate trust and relaxation for one sweet little Pomeranian with neurological issues in Reiki At AID: Allie.

Finally, a well-written article from Beth Lowell at Mysterious Beautiful entitled Algae – Why I recommend this superfood for every pet…and every pet owner. After reading the information that Beth shared, I am inspired to obtain some and try it on my cat, Kiya, who has suffered for years from chronic sinus issues. As someone who also works holistically with animals clients, I like the fact that the four algae work with the body’s master glands to encourage self-healing, and am interested in the possible benefits for other clients with autoimmune issues, seizures, etc.

Tails Wags the Dog, and Gets 5 Star Review on About.com

tree seed pods 2 webI just received this email from the Environmental Defense Fund which essentially breaks down the impact of climate change or global warming into areas of the U.S., creating a very real scenario of how the effects will be felt in our own backyards.

Not only will our daily lives be affected but also that of our life-giving plants, trees and local wildlife, each of which are essential to a balanced ecosystem. No matter which part of the country we hail from, losing even one species in the chain could create a cascade effect that brings the whole system down. Our world took millenia to evolve, please don’t let our present lifestyle destroy its’ beauty — help sow the seeds of change.

From the Environmental Defense Fund:

If you aren’t sure why global warming is our top priority, please read this email.

Moments ago, the White House released a detailed scientific report forecasting devastating impacts of global warming in the United States if we don’t take dramatic steps now to cut our global warming emissions.

The report, Global Climate Change Impacts in the United States, breaks down climate impacts region-by-region

The Northeast:
• Hartford and Philadelphia could average 30 days of 100+ temperatures per year while Boston could see more than 20 100-degree days per year;
• Native maple, beech, birch, spruce and fir forests could be almost entirely lost;
• The climate of New Hampshire could resemble the climate of North Carolina.

The Southeast:
• Much of Florida and southeast Texas could see more than 180 days in the 90s per year while other southeastern states could see more than 100 90-degree days per year;
• Spring and summer drought has already increased by 12 percent and 14 respectively over the last 30 years. The frequency, intensity and duration of droughts in the region are likely to increase;
• Sea level rise and stronger storm surges could inundate and ultimately flood coastal communities along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts.

The Midwest:
• The climate of Michigan could resemble the climate of Oklahoma and the climate of Illinois could resemble the climate of Texas;
• Deadly heat waves like the one that killed more than 700 people in Chicago in 1995, will become more frequent. Under higher emission scenarios, Chicago could experience up to three such heat waves every year;
• Higher emissions scenarios would cause a water level drop of 1-2 feet in the Great Lakes, threatening shipping, infrastructure, beaches and ecosystems.

The Great Plains:
• Hotter, drier summers will threaten the already overused High Plains aquifer, which irrigates 13 million acres and provides water to 80% of the people in the region;
• Increased temperatures and higher carbon dioxide levels will threaten farming activities with more drought, pest infestations, and faster weed growth;
• Under higher emission scenarios, North and South Dakota, which currently see only a handful of 100-degree days, could see 50 or more days of 100+ temperatures per year.

The Southwest:
• Under higher emission scenarios, the southern half of Arizona, southeastern California and Las Vegas could see more than 120 days with 100+ temperatures;
• Most of the region could see precipitation levels decline by more than 40%, pushing already water-strained areas over the edge;
Southwestern forests will be decimated with less water, more wildfires and more invasive pests. Under higher emissions scenarios, California’s mountain forests could decline by 60-90%.

The Northwest:
• Mountain snowpack runoff, critical water needs, could run 20-40 days earlier, threatening water resources in summer months;
Declining summer streamflows and warmer water temperatures could push salmon and other cold water fish species, already stressed by human activities, over the brink;
• 100-degree days are rare today in the Northwest. Under higher emission scenarios, much of the region could see 30-40 days of 110+ temperatures per year.
• Without action, this is the future that awaits our children. We can’t let it happen.

The good news? The U.S. House could vote on a landmark energy and global warming bill as soon as next week. We’re doing everything we can to pass this bill and keep the pressure on the Senate to move a bill of its own.

Here are three things you can do now to help:

1. Take action to urge passage of the bill in the House.

2. Forward this email to all your friends and family.

3. Share facts about your region on Facebook or Twitter. Please include a link to our action alert: http://support.edf.org/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=118

Thanks for all you do,
Environmental Defense Fund

P.S. In addition to the human toll, this report reinforces the dire threat American wildlife face in a warming world. Go to our Warming and Wildlife campaign to meet and see seven “ambassador” species that face a bleak future in a warmer world.

Having trouble staying grounded, focused, and centered?
Want to communicate better with animals?

In December of 2008 Wild Reiki and Shamanic Healing released the first ever shamanic calendar/workbook created as a 12-step healing process for people and the earth. And we created matching Journals to enable you to deepen your experiences and chart your progress.

Now we’ve paired the theme of each month’s photo and energy healing exercise with a single, powerful crystal/flower essence mist from Vi Miere to increase the shift possibilities. Each mist was chosen shamanically by Rose De Dan, WRSH, to support the particular theme of that month.

In the Calendar, January’s theme is how to keep your energy, your family’s, and that of your companion animals, clear. Daily practices for staying clean in a dirty world help clear hucha, or heavy energy, before it has a chance to settle in to the physical body, thereby creating the potential for physical illness and emotional stress. Clear mist is the paired Vi Miere essence for this purpose. Check out our shamanic gifts for other ways to clear heavy energy.

February’s theme is the ability to stay focused in the present moment, to be fully connected to the Earth. Lack of such connection can result in feeling unfocused, scattered, emotionally overwhelmed, spacey, etc. Ground mist is the paired Vi Miere essence for February. Check out our energy jewelry for other stone allies for staying grounded.

March’s theme is about developing our abilities to connect and communicate with our wild animal and bird neighbors. This ability furthers our connection to ourselves and to the Earth, and can result in powerful shifts in perception and a sense of well-being and reason for being. Communicate mist is the paired Vi Miere essence for March.

The remaining months and their paired mists are listed below. In the coming months we will explore the themes for each in greater depth.

April – Gratitude
May
– Environmental Oneness
June
- Wisdom
July
– Sky
August
– Serene
September
– Create
October
– Manifest
November
- Transformation
December - Shining Spirit

Vi Miere mists were created to raise our vibration; removing blocks and old, self-defeating patterns that no longer serve us. You don’t have to purchase the Calendar to benefit from any of the Vi Miere mists, compact, affordable, and easy to use, they make great travel companions as we walk through the world each day.

To order or to see the rest of the Vi Miere mists click here. If you have questions or need help with choosing the right mist for you call 206-933-7877, or send an email for a consultation.

COMING SOON! An ebook version of the shamanic workbook/calendar so that you can practice year-round.

12 Steps to a Shining Spirit

Northern Cat Lights

by Rose De Dan

kiya-chases-screen1web

Recently I purchased a long-overdue, new computer. My new iMac has sped up my work life immensely, and is a sculptural work of art, for a computer (thanks, Apple and Steve Jobs!). However, it has an additional, and probably unanticipated benefit: my cat, Kiya, loves one of the screen savers.

Originally I had used one of the Apple slideshows of trees and Nature, visually stunning and restful, but suddenly I needed a change of pace, and the beautiful streamers of moving light called Flurry seemed just the thing, so I reset it and left the room.

kiya-watches-screenwebWhen I returned, it was to find Kiya parked right in front of the screen, actively patting it and chasing the streamers as they moved (you can see her pawprint smears from previous passes in the photo). I should have known this would happen, this was the cat that once spent a half hour with me watching Jacquie Lawson animated Christmas cards (see The True Joy of the Season).

Now it appears that my new computer was not just a business purchase, but also a Christmas present for Kiya and I, making it, paws down, the most expensive cat toy I have ever purchased.

Then she did something even more entertaining and amazing, she just sat and watched the light show. I wondered if I should pass her some popcorn, or perhaps some catnip would be more appropriate?

Shamanic inspiration often surfaces in interesting ways. Shamanism is not just about being spiritual, it is about walking in this world in a spiritual fashion. I always find it amusing when I receive a new idea that can do both.

In the Peruvian shamanic tradition sacred palo santo wood (or holy wood) is used for offerings in ceremony and as an incense for smudging and clearing of heavy energies. It has a wonderful scent that is difficult to describe, but everyone who smells it finds it unique and delightful. Unlit, its aroma and energy can produce a relaxation response, which is why I like to keep some out at home and in my office.

One day I suddenly had a vision of creating a palo santo wood pendant that could be used as a car air freshener. If blessed shamanically the palo santo wood could also assist in keeping the space in the car clear while assisting in reducing driving stress!

I smiled as I realized that this natural wood could be a more beautiful, sustainable and spiritual alternative to the popular, but chemically enhanced “Christmas tree” air fresheners I see hanging from many rear view mirrors. The palo santo wood is longer lasting, too, making it economical and earth friendly. You can rejuvenate the scent by sanding lightly with a nail file, or simply scratching it with a thumbnail.

So, I now offer the Palo Santo Wood Car Air Freshener Pendant under my Peruvian and Shamanic Gifts page on my website. A package contains three energetically blessed pieces of palo santo, each decorated with a different hand-painted bead from Peru (two Inca designs and one desert scene with llama), strung on a hand-cut leather thong to hang or carry. And with three I figured you can use them all throughout your house, too, they work great as a closet or drawer sachet, or you could pass one along as a gift.

I like the thought that the pendant might bring down the stress level of people stuck in traffic (I live in Seattle where gridlock on I-5 is becoming a major occurrence), or perhaps might help a driver stay grounded, balanced and centered for an overall safer driving experience. I can’t wait to see how other ancient traditions might suggest adaptations for our modern world.
